PORTLAND Ore. (KOIN) — In April 2023, Nike founder Phil Knight and his wife Penny did something no one has ever done before. They gifted $400 million to support Black residents of Portland.

Thus, the 1803 Fund was born to enhance place, culture and education in the areas of inner North and Northeast Portland, known as Albina.

Albina was once the cultural hub of Portland’s black community before urban renewal and gentrification projects – such as Memorial Coliseum, Legacy Emanuel Hospital, and Interstate 5 – pushed many Black residents out.
